Story by Bryen Glass

According to the Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs, "the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) was established to provide nutritionally balanced school lunch meals at a low cost to children each school day. Eligible children may receive meals at a free or reduced price. The program reimburses schools with federally funded dollars for meals that comply with the USDA nutrition standards. NSLP operates in Maryland public schools, nonprofit private schools, and residential childcare institutions."

Randallstown High School student, Kendall Werts, is not a vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian. In fact, she loves the meat-lovers pizza from Ledo Pizza. This year she has taken on a noble cause to get more suitable options for students who are vegetarian, pescatarian, or those who want more of the healthy selections. Kendall decided to kickstart this mission on behalf of her fellow students who, to her dismay, were really dissatisfied with the availability of food choices in school. Kendall stated, "There's never enough of the food that they can eat, and some students just can't afford to bring lunch to school every day." The meal pattern chart below shows the standard categories and quantities of food as a guide.

As an advocate of the students who felt left out, she started a petition at her school with the help of fellow students and friends to make a change. She would like for all of her fellow high school students, parents, and adults to join her on this crusade by signing her petition. Click the button below to sign the petition.

The Word of the Day is BEFORE

Story by Bryen Glass

Just in time for Earth Day, Litter Blitz is here!! Are you planning a cleanup to celebrate? Register it at https://baltcolitterblitz-bc-gis.hub.arcgis.com/. Baltimore County will provide free bags and gloves upon request, while supplies last. The Litter Blitz initiative is a partnership between the County Executive’s Office, and Baltimore County departments - Public Works, Transportation, Environmental Protection and Sustainability, and Recreation and Parks.

According to the Maryland Department of the Environment, "litter is the improper disposal of unwanted material. Litter can have large and lasting effects on our communities, such as its impacts to wild-life, people, and the environment, not to mention how it makes the community look and the cost and resources it takes to pick it up."

Baltimore County Executive, John Olszewski Jr., is no stranger to environmental causes. In his first budget, he created the Baltimore County’s first sustainability officer to coordinate the county’s work to promote green energy, combat climate change, and protect the environment. He also renewed the glass recycling services. On environment, he issued the following statement:

As our county continues to grow, we must balance growth with conservation. There must be a concerted effort to advance environmental protection, continue preserving open space, and promote green energy. Our county is already over-developed along the northeast and northwest corridors — over 90 percent of the population lives on just one third of the county’s landmass. It’s time to think smarter about development and commit to a greener Baltimore County.

This is an initiative we all should be a part of to keep our residential and business communities vibrant. Check out the communities link on the www.4410online.com to contact your community association and get them involved. Share with family, friends and neighbors.
